Can I claim glasses through my health insurance?

Man putting on sunglasses frame in strong sun light

If you’re tempted by our handmade glasses, you might be wondering whether you can claim some of the cost back through your health insurance.

The short answer is: possibly, yes.

Depending on where you live and the type of healthcare, workplace benefits or insurance policy you have, your plan may include an allowance towards optical expenses such as prescription glasses.

This article is specifically for you if you’re based outside the USA and want to claim for your glasses after purchasing them from us.

(If you’re based in the United States and have an HSA or FSA, we have a separate payment option available through Gale. You can read this guide on paying with your HSA or FSA.)

If you’re based outside of the United States, the process is usually quite simple. You place your order with us as normal, then request an itemised receipt which you can submit to your health insurer for reimbursement.

Exactly how much you can claim (and what qualifies) depends on your individual policy. But when it comes to providing the paperwork for your new glasses, we can help.

Using an itemised receipt to claim for your glasses

Your health insurance, workplace benefits or health cash plan may provide you with an optical allowance towards the cost of prescription eyewear.

Depending on your policy, this might be a fixed amount you can claim during a particular period, or your provider may reimburse a percentage of your eligible optical expenses.

For example, you might have an annual or two-yearly allowance that can be used towards a new pair of prescription glasses.

The exact amount available to you varies considerably between countries, insurance providers and individual policies, so it’s always worth checking your own cover before placing your order if reimbursement is important to you.

Once you’ve purchased your glasses from Banton Frameworks, you can ask us to provide a fully itemised receipt for your order.

This gives you formal documentation of your purchase which you can then submit directly to your insurer or benefits provider as part of your claim.

Your itemised receipt can include details such as:

•    Your name
•    Your order number
•    The date of purchase
•    Your spectacle/sunglasses frame model
•    Your prescription lenses details
•    An itemised breakdown of your order
•    The amount you paid
•    Our business details

Seen above, these are the details your insurer may need when assessing your claim.

Some providers have their own requirements, so we can’t guarantee that every insurer will ask for exactly the same information. If they subsequently request something additional from us, just get in touch and we’ll do our best to help.

How to request your itemised receipt

Once you’ve placed your order, simply get in touch and ask us for an itemised receipt for your health insurer.

You don’t need to complete a special form with us or select anything differently at checkout.

Just send us an email with your order details and let us know that you need a receipt for an optical insurance claim. We’ll generate it for you and send it back by email, ready for you to upload or forward to your provider.

We’re a very small team here in Glasgow, so please allow us up to 48 hours to prepare and send your receipt.

If your insurer comes back to you afterwards asking for some additional information, send their request our way and we’ll help where we can.

Can I claim Banton Frameworks glasses through my health insurance?

Potentially. If your healthcare, workplace benefits or insurance policy includes optical cover, you may be able to claim towards the cost of your prescription glasses.

Eligibility ultimately depends on your own insurance policy, so we recommend checking with your provider if you’re unsure.

How much can I claim towards my glasses?

This varies depending on your insurer and the level of cover you have.

Your policy may provide a fixed optical allowance, reimburse a percentage of the cost or have a maximum amount you can claim within a particular period.

If being able to claim is an important part of your purchasing decision, it’s best to confirm your available allowance with your provider before ordering.

Can you check whether my insurance will cover my glasses?

Unfortunately not. We don’t have access to your personal insurance policy, so we can’t tell you whether your particular purchase will qualify.

Your insurer or benefits provider will be able to confirm this for you.

What we can do is provide you with an itemised receipt and help with additional purchase information if your provider asks for it.

Do you submit the insurance claim for me?

No. We can only provide your itemised receipt, which you submit to your own health insurer or benefits provider to claim any reimbursement you’re entitled to.

Can I request an itemised receipt before I place my order?

No. An itemised receipt can only be generated once an actual purchase has been made.

However, if your insurer needs an example of the receipt **before** you order (to confirm eligibility), please feel free to send them the example receipt previously demonstrated in this article (above).

Can I claim for both my spectacle frame and prescription lenses?

Possibly. Some policies cover prescription eyewear as a complete purchase, while others have more specific rules about what counts as an eligible optical expense.

Your insurer will be able to confirm exactly what your policy covers.

As per the example receipt (further above) your itemised receipt will show the relevant components of your order separately, making it easier for your provider to assess.

Can I claim for prescription sunglasses?

Depending on your policy, prescription sunglasses may also qualify as an optical expense.

However, eligibility differs between providers, so check with your insurer before ordering if you’re relying on reimbursement.

We will provide exactly the same type of itemised receipt for prescription sunglasses as we do for prescription spectacles.

Can I claim for non-prescription sunglasses?

Typically, non-prescription sunglasses don’t qualify as a medical or optical expense.

If you’re considering a pair of non-prescription sunglasses and intend to claim for them, we recommend asking your provider whether they’re eligible before placing your order.

Does it matter that Banton Frameworks is based in Scotland?

That depends on your insurance policy. We can provide you with a formal itemised receipt for your purchase from Banton Frameworks in Glasgow, Scotland.

However, some insurers may have their own rules regarding purchases made overseas or from providers outside your home country.

If you’re unsure, check with your insurer before ordering.

What if my insurer asks for additional information?

Send us an email and let us know exactly what they’ve requested. If it’s information we can provide about your order, your prescription lenses or Banton Frameworks, we’ll do our best to help.

Can you guarantee that my insurance claim will be accepted?

No. We can provide supporting documentation for your purchase, but we can’t determine whether your claim will be approved or how much your insurer will reimburse.

Those decisions are made entirely by your insurance provider according to the terms of your individual policy.

If you’re unsure whether your new glasses will be covered, the safest option is to check with your provider before placing your order.

Once you’re ready to go ahead, you can order from us as normal.

And when the time comes to make your claim, just ask us for your itemised receipt. We’ll take care of our side of the paperwork.
