Satin Blue is a premium lens coating for Lite Range lenses. It's designed to protect your eyes from both blue-violet light and ultraviolet (UV) rays which is applied to the front surface of your lenses. It adds several layers of defence against common vision-related issues like screen glare, smudges, and daily scratches.
This specialist coating goes beyond basic lens protection. Unlike standard hard multi-coat (HMC) finishes, Satin Blue includes anti-glare, anti-static, water-repellent and smudge-resistant properties—making it one of the most advanced coating upgrades available for Lite Range lenses via our lens menu.

What is blue light and why does it matter?
Blue light, also known as High Energy Visible (HEV) light, is emitted naturally by the sun and artificially by digital screens, LED lights, and fluorescent bulbs. It falls within the 400–500 nanometre (nm) wavelength range on the visible light spectrum, with HEV light concentrated towards the lower end (around 400–450 nm).
While a small amount of blue light exposure is perfectly normal—and even necessary for regulating our circadian rhythm—prolonged contact (particularly from screens) may negatively impact your eyes, sleep quality and overall wellbeing.
Long hours spent using phones, laptops or tablets can lead to symptoms like:
- Eye fatigue
- Blurry vision
- Dry or irritated eyes
- Headaches
- Disrupted sleep cycles
This is because excessive blue light can overstimulate the visual system and suppress melatonin production, the hormone responsible for regulating your sleep. That’s why filtering out this type of light—especially in the later hours of the day—can support more comfortable vision and better rest.
Key Features and Benefits of Satin Blue

Scratch resistant
Adds a tough outer layer to help guard against minor abrasions.
Does Satin Blue help with digital eye strain?
Absolutely. Whether you're working remotely, scrolling your phone, or streaming TV in the evening, long periods of screen use can trigger digital eye strain, also known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
Satin Blue helps by filtering blue-violet light and reducing the glare that contributes to this strain. Its anti-glare, anti-reflective surface enhances your visual comfort, especially during extended screen time. If you spend most of your workday—and a fair amount of your downtime—on digital devices, Satin Blue can make a noticeable difference in how your eyes feel.
Does Satin Blue change the colour of my lenses?
Unlike certain other anti-blue light lenses, Satin Blue doesn't give your lenses that yellowish hue. Instead, it creates a subtle blue or violet sheen, visible in certain lights—similar to traditional anti-glare coatings. This is because Satin Blue is applied externally to your lenses instead of being embedded into the lens material itself.
So what does Satin Blue actually look like?
Well, that's a difficult one to capture, but the digital render below gives you an idea of what Satin Blue looks like compared to a regular hard multi-coat (HMC) lens coating.
Is Satin Blue for me?
If you spend hours in front of screens every day, Satin Blue is worth considering. Whether you're a designer, office worker, student or enjoy winding down with some evening TV, this coating helps ease the visual fatigue that often goes unnoticed.
By filtering out blue-violet light and protecting against UV, scratches, and smudges, Satin Blue offers both practical benefits and visual comfort—without affecting how your lenses look.

Is Crizal® Prevencia® better than Satin Blue?
Crizal® Prevencia® is Essilor’s own high-performance blue light protective coating, available only on Essilor lenses. Like Satin Blue, it blocks blue-violet light and offers anti-glare, anti-scratch, and UV protection.
However, Crizal® Prevencia® uses Light Scan™ technology, which selectively filters harmful light while allowing beneficial blue-turquoise light to pass through—something not currently offered by Satin Blue.
So what’s the difference?
Satin Blue is only for Lite Range lenses, great all-round performance, blue-violet light protection.
Crizal® Prevencia® is only for Essilor lenses and uses selective filtering via Light Scan™ for added precision.
Your choice ultimately depends on which type of lenses you select via our menu.
