Vanguards Magazine, Issue 01

Set for it's second issue later this Autumn, Vanguards is a quarterly publication founded by Hugo Ross and James Roberts. Whilst in their final stages of their degree, the duo set out to investigate and celebrate some of Scotland's most revered manufacturers and brands. With a focus for their country's rich history and tradition, Hugo and James have since developed strong affiliations for the well made, north of the border.

Epitomised by the people they met on their travel around Scotland, the title 'Vanguards' describes those who continue to defy today's globalised society. Responsible for some of the worlds most enjoyed Scottish products, this name pays homage to those who continue to work using traditional materials and age old techniques. An underlying tone of principled defiance is woven through the pages of issue 01, celebrating those who perpetuate their respective crafts.

For those familiar with our blogs, Vanguards Issue 01 features an array of brands that would certainly sit well amongst those we have already covered. From classic raincoats to waxed cotton bags, Loch Duart, Bernat Klein, Laurence Odie, Mackintosh, Black Isle, Anta and Trakke all make for an engaging inaugural issue.

Refreshing but equally as unusual in today's digital era, the printed publication is led by a youthful team, averaging in their twenties. In portrayal of their collective talent, Hugo and James have selected members and contributors from an array of their talented class mates with whom they studied together.

Many thanks to James Roberts for his time.

''Vanguards was born in the penultimate year of our degrees at Edinburgh University. Over 18 months we have explored and investigated the Scottish brands and products that we admire. We have learned so much about Scotland's incredibly rich, diverse and internationally respected design and manufacturing tradition.

Many of the individuals that make up this tradition have dedicated their lives to mastering their profession. This is why Scottish products are enjoyed all over the world. Their skill and quality stays true to the heritage from which it comes. They exist uncompromised in a global society increasingly defined by it's fleeting fashion trends and emphasis on profit over artisanal pedigree.

We have come to call these men and woman Vanguards.''
