Specialising in producing anodised aluminium ware in London since 1947, KAYMET manufacture a series of timeless trays, trollies and hotplates.
Based in Bermondsey, London, Kaymet was founded in a post war Britain specialising in making parts for WWII radios and radar equipment. Resulting from increased war production capabilities, the UK metal industry experienced a surge in alternative alloys. Aluminium become more readily available than the staple of steel and was unsurprisingly cheaper to attain.
Aluminium became the material of choice for Kaymet. It yielded appropriate and durable war time properties, that could easily colured via anodising. When the war ended, founder Sydney Schreiber wanted to utilise Kaymet’s machinery and decided to transition from producing radio components to new and more relevant products. This adaptation presented itself in the form catering and food service utensils, now synonymous items to the Kaymet brand name.
Kaymet’ range adopts a clean and utilitarian aesthetic, born from their process of manufacture. Producing from sometimes as little as a singular piece of aluminium, hygiene and robustness are easily attained. Seen in the images below, their range has a recognisable simplicity throughout. To this day, Kaymet utensils can be found in many top restaurants, bars and hotels having made little change to their iconic designs since they began production. Born from post war demand, functional and increasingly classic aluminium ware remains to be produced inside the Bermondsey factory; a testament to classic and functional design.
NATIVE is a blog series intended to showcase select brands who implement product manufacture here in the UK. Admittedly, not all aspects of every product can be made here, however we are most interested in those that can.
UK production has changed dramatically over the decades. Like every industry, embracing change is vital, not just to survive but to thrive in conjunction with social, economic and technological advancement.
Recognition of businesses, old and new, that implement outright or even partial local production is something we are genuinely passionate about. As designers, it is our belief that people should know more about how, why and where great products are made in the UK.
NATIVE is our way of sharing this information.
"Every contrivance of man, every tool, every instrument, every utensil, every article designed for use, of each and every kind, evolved from very simple beginnings."
