Based in Cumbernauld Scotland, Hancock Vulcanised Articles is UK label that specialise in hand making luxury rubberised outerwear. Founded by Daniel Dunko and Gary Bott in 2012, the outerwear brand offer a beautiful range of weatherproof garments all of which are beautifully handmade inside the Hancock factory.

Co founder Daniel Dunko joined the formerly known company Traditional Weatherwear during his teenage years working inside the factory as an apprentice coat maker. Working in this position for five comprehensive years, Dunko was eventually granted the sales position job of which he had persistently requested. It was in is this position that he developed valuable commercial partnerships built on his recognition for the niche appeal of their handmade weatherwear garments. It was from these partnerships that fuelled further manufacture, eventually propelling Dunko to later become sales director and eventually Managing Director in the year 2000 after 27 years of service to the company. It was during this time that Dunko transitioned the manufacturer to a brand name ; Mackintosh.

Later joined by the acclaimed Gary Bott, creative director at the time for Globe Trotter, the duo were looking for something new. Together they developed a new outerwear brand under the name of Hancock. Together they utilised historical references taken from a self written book by Thomas Hancock, the pioneering founder of the British rubber industry. Hancock was responsible for the invention of rubber vulcanisation and elastication during the early 1800’s. From the pages of this personal narrative, mixed with their combined experience, Dunko and Bott have since led Hancock to become the luxury, design led outerwear brand it is today.

On our visit to the nearby Cumbernauld factory we experienced the detailed and meticulous process of their manufacture. Every piece or ‘article’ as they refer to them is expertly cut and sewn by their team of in-house machinists (see images below). The assembled articles are then passed onto experienced coat makers for further assembly. Using a process called ‘smearing’, the interior details such as the seams and pockets are glued and taped by hand. This involves the application of adhesive using only the coat makers index finger, an application that surprises you on initial impression but certainly creates a strong and permanent bond.

Extensive to their core range of outerwear, Hancock has participated in recent and notable collaborations with companies such as Converse and Missoni to name but a few. Positioned as ‘Modern Heritage’, this term is truly underlined resultant of their classic cut raintcoats designed and handmade under their own factory roof.

“All our Vulcanised Articles are handmade exclusively in rubber bonded, natural cloths such as cotton, wool or silk. Still produced at the original Victorian mill in England, two-layers of cloth are bonded with a layer of rubber in-between creating an impenetrable barrier ensuring the finished cloth is 100% waterproof.”

Upon our factory visit, we were met with a team of family related machinists who were immensely skilled but also incredibly friendly to speak with. Under one roof, the productive workforce produce high quality, beautifully detailed garments.

Many thanks to Colin and Daniel for letting us visit the Hancock factory. Thank you to the team of workers at Hancock for speaking with us.

NATIVE is a blog series intended to showcase select brands who implement product manufacture here in the UK. Admittedly, not all aspects of every product can be made here, however we are most interested in those that can.

UK production has changed dramatically over the decades. Like every industry, embracing change is vital, not just to survive but to thrive in conjunction with social, economic and technological advancement.

Recognition of businesses, old and new, that implement outright or even partial local production is something we are genuinely passionate about. As designers, it is our belief that people should know more about how, why and where great products are made in the UK.

NATIVE is our way of sharing this information.

"Every contrivance of man, every tool, every instrument, every utensil, every article designed for use, of each and every kind, evolved from very simple beginnings."
